Hi,
You have worked hard throughout the year, you have met all the targets and performed well in all arenas, and now it is the time of annual appraisal. Of course you expect to be promoted. Sadly, you are denied promotion this year. Rejection is hard to deal with. Not getting promoted actually negatively influences your entire career.
Here’s what you can do to improve your chance of getting promoted
Document your achievements
Track your progress and make a note of it. Quantify your achievements. For instance write down percentage of improvement noted, number of projects undertaken etc. You can share this report monthly with your manager to keep him informed of your work. You have to be your own cheerleader in highlighting your achievements.
Talk to your reporting manager
Instead of waiting for others to acknowledge your work, make the first move and inform them of your expectation. You can ask the concerned person for guidance so that you can get promoted. Managers will be happy to help you because your promotion would help them in getting promoted as well. Have a conversation with your manager and be open about your target.
Ask for feedback
Meet your reporting manager and discuss why you are not promoted. Go in the meeting with notes of your work and compare them with what your manager thinks. Create a detailed plan on improving skills and set regular feedback meetings. Take the onus of maintaining regular meetings. This will be a good way to showcase your capability of keeping deadlines.
