Hi Readers,
As promised before, in this newsletter we talk about creating engaging content on LinkedIn. But before we do that let me share a thought on COVID-19.
Nothing in this world is perfect or complete in itself. Humans, the most evolved species are constantly struggling with their imperfections and trying to make things perfect around them. By that logic, a virus, i.e a nucleic acid molecule with a protein coat is also imperfect. I mean it is vincible. Like the whole of creation, it has a weak spot. The pandemic is causing much panic in the world but the fact is that we are fighting a battle against an imperfect virus and it is just a matter of finding it’s weak spot to overpower the virus. A reassuring thought, isn’t it?
Creating the almost perfect content for LinkedIn
Engaging the audience on LinkedIn is basically asking them to interact with your service product or you as a brand. Now, this is something that cannot be coerced. Although I would not say that it is difficult but it needs to be set up. You have to construct the foundation to be in a position to effectively engage with your audience.
The first rule of engagement is to get the attention of your audience. How do you get people to look at you in the sea of posts on LinkedIn?
Use a Great Graphic
A human eye is more attracted to color and the picture has plenty of it. I kept a tab on the reactions I received on my posts for a week and discovered that the same posts with images have high viral quotient than the ones with only text. So, use the picture to tell a story. You can convey so much more via a well made graphic than 1300 characters. Here is an important hack for utilizing the image. Add keywords in the alternate text section. Keyword optimization on the image will make it easier for Google to index your image.
Direct & Conversational Headlines
The headline is the next thing the viewer reads after the graphic. So, make it clever and catchy. Address your audience directly and tell them what information is there in the store. For instance, if you are writing for HR professionals then your headline could be; 5 Hiring Tips for HR Professionals. Make it conversational, like asking a question or relate to a common problem. In the barrage of content, you have less than a second to grab the attention of your audience so make every word count.
Fundamentals of the written content
Now, that you have got the attention of your reader, you want to provide valuable content. Not all of us are good at writing but that does not mean that you cannot be a thought leader. How?
Make it contextual - Writing on current and trending topics are more likely to get attention. Link current scenarios and embed them into your content. But make sure that does not sound forced. You can take a cue from all the information available on the topic and then construct content with your viewpoint on it.
Share personal insights - Talk about your experience with a product, service or your success and failures. It will be a piece of authentic information and when it is original then people relate. Give food for thought and incite people to interact with you by asking their viewpoint. It opens doors for two-way communication.
Provide a solution - Teach your audience to fix a problem. For that to happen you should have a working ultimate solution. Refrain from pitching the solution. Your goal must be to provide a solution that is teaching something.
Recommend content - You do not have to create original content all the time. Leverage content created by others. Curate content from quality sources and recommend it. Like any interesting blog that you read or a podcast that you heard. Write a quote from the blog/podcast and if possible tag the person behind it.
I am still experimenting on LinkedIn and in the process, I have learned a thing or two about creating engaging content. Watch out for tomorrow’s article on my tips on content creation for LinkedIn.
