Hey Folks!
We are back!
Yes, it has been a while since I last released an edition of this newsletter, and I have to admit that I missed writing it.
So, without wasting more pixels, let us dive into today's topic - tackling sexism at the workplace.
It has only been a couple of weeks since we all celebrated Women's Day at our workplaces, and some of us celebrated it with women in our lives as well.
However, it is a sad reality that despite the widespread discussion and focus on the issue, gender bias exists. According to this article, I recently read, gender bias is most prominently visible in a professional setting.
"Why are you irritated? Is it that time of the month?"
"Women are bad at computers."
"Women are emotional about everything."
Are you a woman who had at one time or another heard statements like the ones mentioned above at your workplace? I cannot possibly understand how a woman feels when she is subjected to such sexist comments, but I do feel the embarrassment one goes through.
Although it is the responsibility of organizations, government, and men to ensure gender parity, nevertheless there are times when you need to speak up for yourself. Here are a few ways to deal with sexism at work.
Maintain your Calm
In a situation when your male colleague tries to dominate the conversation by making sexist comments, remain calm. Do not react immediately, and at all costs, do not give knee-jerk reactions. Wait for him to finish and calmly remind him of the point of the conversation.
"Let’s get back to the issue–whether we should change the design or not.”
By not reacting to his comment, you send a strong message that he cannot have his way by talking down to you.

Face the situation but again in a calm manner. Let the person know that he is making a sexist comment and you do not appreciate such behavior. All organizations have a zero-tolerance policy against insensitive comments. So, inform him politely that he can get into serious trouble for making such statements. When required, do not hold back from reaching out to your manager or HR.
The Bold Decision

At times, the bold decision can be to change your place of work or request for transfer. Also, you can write to a senior leader in the organization when your pleas for help are falling on deaf ears. You cannot sacrifice your dignity and perform well at your job. For you to unleash your full potential, it is important that you are treated with respect and given equal opportunities.
